Our Friends at the Northumbrian Language Society are hosting this year's National Dialect Festival.
It's will take place between Friday 18th October and Sunday 20th October 2024 at The County Hotel, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne (Opposite Newcastle Central train station).
On the Saturday there will be competitions for:
The Sam Laycock Trophy – for WRITING in the host dialect (this time Northumbrian)
The Bill o' Bowes Trophy – for WRITING in any English dialect
The Eric Topping Trophy – For a PERFORMANCE of any English Dialect piece.
Entries for the writing competitions must be performed by the author and must not exceed 5 MINUTES in length (inc. introduction)

Sue Wilkinson from the University of Cumbria, has been researching the Grasmere Dialect plays performed between 1905 and 1937. She is presenting her research, with voices given by our Society's very own Jean Scott-Smith and John Campbell.
